Have No Misconceptions

Filed under: The Online Dojo — admin @ 4:38 pm

I just received an Email from a woman who has a child (3 year old) and about to have another. Considering my wife is in a similar situation, this question couldn’t be more relevant. This idea can be expanded to those of us getting older, injured or of smaller stature. Keep in mind, a little common sense goes a long way.

First of all, the life you used to enjoy has changed. You can not casually go to places you used to go. A woman, preoccupied with the safety and care of two children, let alone one, is a prime target for the pieces of sh$t who earn their lining taking advantage of this situation. So, how can you best prepare yourself?

First, pick your fights. Go to only very public, very safe places that are mother and child friendly. Going to malls in the evening or quickly running into the Laundromat with the kids in the car is probably not a great idea. If you can schedule a day to run errands child free, great, if you can’t, just ask yourself, if I came back and my child was missing, was it worth it? That’s it, it’s a simple as that. Once you start talking about, I can’t afford a sitter or I have no support- that’s your decision, but if you chose a Laundromat with a delivery service worth it? What’s it worth to you? Would you be thinking about the cost or inconvenience then? The point is you have to think in this way because the predators or banking on the fact you will play the odds and hedge your bets. All you have to do is be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Beware of people telling you, you will have no problems fighting with a child strapped on your back, protecting another while trying to escape a determined assailant. Those people should be arrested at the very least. I hear some of these experts talk and one thing comes to mind- this idiot has now idea what he’s talking about. Plus he believes his own B.S. Personally, I don’t care if you’re teaching how to levitate, move rocks with your mind or prove the nothingness of lute-fish. But as soon as you tell a mother of two in her forties that she will be able to handle any attacker after a one hour seminar, you should be arrested. Now, don’t get me wrong, people can be trained. It just doesn’t happen in an hour or two.

As I said before in previous articles, if you’re serious, really serious, take shooting lessons and be armed at all times. Next step would be push-daggers or finger-hole design knives; something that you can grab, squeeze and not let go. Next is pepper sprays and stun guns. Have these at the ready.

Strategically, the most vulnerable you will be is packing the kids in the car. If you are alone, have a system for packing the kids away while you have one hand on your weapon of choice. Your weapon if not in your hand should be at the tip of your fingers.

Practice: drill when you put the kids in the car in your driveway. Picture the assailant and draw your weapon. Do this during times of the loading process that you feel the most distracted.

Know your route, and pay attention to who’s following you. A few extra turns may smoke someone out. Driving to the police station is an excellent option. Plus, we all have cell phones.

Choosing the correct equipment is essential. We have one arm, one hand EVERYTHING, from strollers to car seats. Think about this when you make your next purchase…HOLD THE PHONES!!! Here’s your million dollar idea: The Tactical Tot Stroller. Hideaway compartments, pepper spray holders- stun gun caddy, .50 cal mount. You get the idea. Run with it. Put a stroller, a video. Hey, a magazine “Tactical Baby” is you child ready for the apocalypse? See what all the best dressed babies will be wearing in all the bunkers! PLUS, How to Burp you tot under fire…

Any way, what you want to do is be aware and plan ahead. People get jammed up because they don’t think a situation through. The idea is to realize when you’re getting in over your head. Don’t let your ego put you in a place that you can’t get out of. Be paranoid, be a little late. Plan and leave early. It’s been my experience, if you have kids, the world will wait for you. If not, screw ‘em.

So where do our videos and training fit in? As an absolute last resort. ALL HAND TO HAND is a tactical last resort. The training does two things: First, it gives you something to fall back on, second it gives you confidence and it awakens the part of you that doesn’t think tactically and defensively. Finally, our stuff works, but its still a last resort. Will someone trained fair better than the person untrained. ABSOLUTLEY. But like the man says, “You don’t bring a knife to a gun fight”. If you choose to end the fight with out a weapon, that’s YOUR CHOICE. I’d rather have it and not use it, than need it and not have it.

The person who doesn’t prepare for the absolute worst and thinks they are going to get out of every situation with just their empty hand is either very ignorant, very lucky or very dead.

Just like the sign says www.thetruthaboutselfdefnse.com

Maybe I didn’t sell a video, but I still have to look at my self in the mirror.

Real Life Self-Defense Starts From…

Filed under: The Online Dojo — admin @ 7:03 am

“Nicky Bats” was an “old school” kinda guy. He was “street” thru and thru. He was a hard bark tough as nails S.O.B. He was a survivor. His definition of “success” in life was dying peacefully at a ripe old age of natural causes, not dying on some frozen blood-soaked battlefield in Korea after being over run by a human swarm of Chi-Coms. Not winding up in a landfill dead of lead poisoning and not dying in some filthy gutter with your innards spilling out from a gaping knife wound.

I once asked Nicky what he thought the “secret” to real world survival was. Now “Nicky Bats” WAS the “go to guy” on matters concerning “reality based” violence. He boiled it down to these words, words which carry a GREAT deal of wisdom…………………..”Dealing with most people is like dealing with a jackass. Even a dumb as a stump jackass has a brain, but it all depends on which end you’re doing business with. Pick the wrong end and pretty soon you’ll find yourself standing knee deep in a pile of stinking donkey s@#t.” Nicky Bats had a REAL dislike for hard guys, tough nuts, and blustering blowhards. Nicky called these types “hard boiled eggs”…………….seemingly tough on the outside, but easily cracked and all yellow and mushy on the inside. If you didn’t know Nicky Bats, by the time he “introduced” himself, it was usually too late.

It took me awhile, but I eventually realized that what “Nicky Bats” was saying was that REAL survival was rooted in the ability to fully understand human nature and understand how that knowledge could really be put to use to “work the mark”, as he would say.

So-called “self-defense” at its core has far more to do with watching, studying and understanding all of the varied components of “human nature” than it does with ANY set of “techniques”, “system” or “method”.

EVERY single interaction with another individual CAN become a “self-defense” scenario or situation. Think about this. HOW many times during the course of a day, a week or a month does someone run SOME type of “grift” with YOU as the intended “mark”. From the subtle to the overt; from the “sneaky” and the “backhanded” to the OPENLY hostile, aggressive and potentially violent; these actions range from the snide comment or wiseass crack all the way up to and including a full blown lethal physical assault. AND they occur EVERYWHERE all the time in EVERY SINGLE “interaction” you have with someone that winds up with you muttering to yourself “what an ASS” or worse, you have in point of fact just engaged in a scenario of “self-defense”.

Every time your head pounded, your heart raced, your guts churned, your teeth gritted, or you clenched your fist in anger because of another’s actions you have just experienced the “jump street” of SELF-DEFENSE.

In the same way that we strive to deal with violent PHYSICAL attack, we should strive to “know” how to deal with these less overt intrusions into our personal space and lives. REMEMBER the MOST subtle of actions can open the door for the most dangerous of encounters and the MOST VIOLENT of outcomes!

The ANSWER lies right there in the “philosophy” of “Nicky Bats”. From the simply annoying and peevish traits of the human condition RIGHT up to the MOST detestable, ugly and violent actions the ANSWER remains pretty much the same. IT’S THIS SIMPLE: Realize from JUMP STREET that you are dealing with the WRONG END of a JACKASS, that NOTHING GOOD will stem from this and that sooner rather than later you are most assuredly going to be CRAPPED UPON.

So the question BEGS to be asked……………………WHY in the world are YOU dealing with the rear end of a JACKASS in the FIRST PLACE!

There any number of “cues” that will alert an astute observer of “human nature” to the intent, mind-set and type of character you are dealing with. USE THAT. Don’t molly-coddle. Don’t make excuses. Don’t “look inward”. Don’t equivocate. DON’T BE SUCKERED and DON’T BE STUPID.

If it looks like a JACKASS and it ACTS like a JACKASS……………………………………..well you can figure out the rest. Never PLAY the other mans game. Never fall for the “grift”. NEVER allow yourself to set up as a “mark”.

REAL SELF-DEFENSE AIN’T JUST ABOUT KNOWING HOW TO STOP THAT BASEBALL BAT DESCENDING UPON YOUR SKULL!

IT IS FIGURING OUT WHY YOU DIDN’T SEE IT COMING IN THE FIRST PLACE!

And if you’re wondering about “Nicky Bats”, as I just found out earlier this evening, his wish came to fruition, he’s finally a “success”.

RIP my dear Brother. In a world of “hard boiled eggs”, the “ones that count”, will remember you as the REAL DEAL!

Murphy’s Law As A Martial Arts Weapon

Filed under: The Online Dojo — admin @ 7:58 pm

Have you ever heard of “Murphy’s Law”?

It basically says, “whatever can go wrong will.”

And in a street-fight, this is more true than anywhere else.

In fact, if there’s one difference between a martial artist who has never been in a real fight, and a martial artist who has been in real fights…it’s the knowledge that anything and everything can and will go wrong 99% of the time.

In other words, you can practice a kick or punch all day long for a year straight. You can have pin point accuracy and know where all the vital areas are. You can be the “best” in your martial arts class and have multiple black belts.

But in a real fight, where dirt can be thrown in your eyes, people can pull weapons, and even your immediate surroundings can get in your way (a patch of ice or snow, for example), the chances of you pulling everything off exactly as you do in training are zero to none.

Trust me on this. I’ve been in real street-fights. It’s never pretty and nothing ever goes the way you think.

And yet, strange as it may sound…this is actually GOOD news for you.

Why?

Because Murphy’s Law applies just as much to the guy (or guys) you’re fighting as it does to you.

Believe me, they’re going to have the same things go wrong for them. It’s not going to be all peaches and cream for the bad guys, either.

And that’s why, if you know, learn and understand street-fighting — which is completely different than tournament arts like tae-kwon-do, for example — you’ll have the immediate ability to adapt and improvise when things go wrong.

But your attackers probably won’t.

Which means, when you are good at street-fighting, Murphy’s Law almost becomes one of your secret weapons. An “ally” that can help you out of a jam, instead of making matters worse.

Regular or De-escalated

Filed under: The Online Dojo — admin @ 6:34 am

We always stress that NOTHING occurs in a vacuum. There always exists stepping stones or a progression of events that lead up to a “situation”. Whether YOU are AWARE of them or not is not the issue(it should be, but as they say “sh%& happens”).

Regardless whether you saw it “coming” or BAM it just kicks you in the ass there were any number of factors that occured PRIOR to the “trouble” you are now facing. Some of those “factors” were quite literally YEARS in the making.

The idea of developing “de-escalation” skills is generally understood as a way to defuse or lower the level of aggressive intent and minimize the possibility of serious hands on physical violence. This is done thru verbal and physical actions that are designed to calm the stormy seas.

Sometimes it will work and sometimes it won’t. I for one would RARELY place a bet on the general altruistic, logical, compassionate and thoughtful “nature” of humankind. So I would ALWAYS opt for the “mindset” that NO MATTER what I do, it most probably WON’T WORK. Somebody is GOING to get a severe asskicking or worse NO MATTER what is done to quell the “potential” violence. So it ONLY makes sense to hedge EVERY bet and do your UTMOST to insure YOU are the asskicker and NOT the asskickee.

Consider YOURSELF very fortunate that you even have the OPPORTUNITY to attempt a run at “de-escalation”. That MEANS that you haven’t just been KILLED or rendered hors d’combat OUTRIGHT. SO USE THIS “GIFT” TO YOUR FULL ADVANTAGE!

DE-ESCALTION, both verbal and physical should be a TACTICAL tool that at it’s ESSENCE has NOTHING to do with your “percieved” intent BUT EVERYTHING to do with SETTING UP YOUR MOST ADVANTAGEOUS STRATEGY FOR ATTACK OR SURVIVAL!

I don’t BELIEVE for a SECOND that Joey Dirtbag is GOING TO BUY INTO the idea of any “peaceable negotiation” ANYMORE THAN I WOULD! A grift is grift and a “front” is a “front”. I KNOW the GAME and so does HE! AT BEST we’re “dancing the dance”.

MY JOB is be MORE believeable and SMARTER than the other guy. ‘Cause we are BOTH RUNNING THE GAME. The best I can hope for is that my opposition wonders if I really am THAT STUPID to believe that my attempts at “backing it down” will really sway his intent to DO what he SET OUT TO DO!

So while I’m acting like my whole demeanor is screaming “HEY, BROTHER DEAREST, CAN’T WE ALL JUST GETTING ALONG”. What I’m really doing is setting HIM UP for the inevitable crash landing.

He’s thinking……LOOK at THIS sappy, pussy-assed schmuck. I’M gonna PLAY him right into the boneyard. I’M using ARTIFICE and guile to manuever HIM for MY BENEFIT.

Dance the dance of the biggest galatic wussy appeaser that was ever BORN. And while YOUR doing that bit of street level “pys-ops” manuever him into YOUR TRAP.

Curbs, poles, fire-hydrants, sharp edges and corners, brick facades, plate glass windows, on rushing traffic, whatever………

Get his back to the nastiest most damaging shit in your environment. Place YOURSELF in the BEST attack line which is HIS worst DEFENSE line. Manuever yourself to the BEST position to ATTACK while SETTING UP YOUR BEST AVENUE OF ESCAPE.

THAT is what the DANCE of “de-escalation” SHOULD BE PRIMARILY ABOUT!

AND……..if by some chance the gods of fortune smile upon you AND the mis-direction or your “de-escalation” PLOY actually WORKS…………………………………………GREAT!

BUT ALWAYS………..ALWAYS PREPARE FOR THE WORST!

DE-ESCALATION is the ARTIFICE that SETS UP THE VEHEMENCE.

Besides I don’t believe ANYTHING is ever going to work as “advertised”.

Don’t be a sucker.

Wing Chun - Chinese Martial Art

Filed under: The Online Dojo — admin @ 7:56 pm

Brief History:

Wing Chun (also known as Wing Tsun, Ving Chun or Ving Tsun) is one of the most popular types of Chinese martial arts. Though it’s basically an unarmed combat technique, Wing Chun may include weapons as part of its course. The origin of Wing Chun can be traced back to China, but the real history of its creation has long been a topic of much debate. The most credible suggestion regarding the origin of Wing Chun dates back to 1700 AD in the Henan Shaolin Monastery.

When the Qing forces raided and ravaged the Southern Shaolin temple, a nun named Ng Mui fled to the distant Daliang Mountains, the only survivor. Ng Mui already had knowledge of Kung Fu in the Shaolin temple, which she assimilated with a new form she had learnt while observing a battle between a snake and a crane. She taught this new combat style to her adopted daughter whom she named Yimm Wing Chun. The new system was refined and then passed on from generation to generation, and was eventually named Wing Chun, after Yimm.

The modernization of Wing Chun started in Hong Kong during the 1950s under a Grandmaster called Yip Man. The discipline began to gain real popularity in Asia and the West when actor Bruce Lee became one of the most famous Wing Chun practitioners.

The Concept of Wing Chun:

Wing Chun is based on three basic principles - Practicality, Efficiency and Economy of Movement.

1. Practicality: Techniques such as Palm-up Hand (tan sau), Wing Arm (bong sau), Slapping Hand (pak sau) are designed to maim the most sensitive or vulnerable parts of the opponent’s body such as throat, groin, eyes and lower torso. Many movements and techniques in Wing Chun are often meant to be fatal.

2. Efficiency: Wing Chun does not use force against force, in order to gain the most efficient manipulation of the body’s energy. It believes in accurately timed and appropriately positioned little movements, and counter-attack is based on the opponent’s own force. This concept is also called Contact Reflexes.

3. Economy of Movement: This is a linear concept in which movements are based on an imaginary pole running vertically through the center of the body. The Center Line spreads out from this Mother Line, and since most of the vital points of the body are located along the Center Line, many offensive and defensive movements are based on this line. The Central Line, on the other hand, is the shortest path between the fighters where most of the combat exchanges take place.

Wing Chun Forms:

There are three basic forms in Wing Chun:

1. Empty Hand Form: This form has three more sub-forms - Siu Nim Tao - the foundation of the art, Chum Kiu - focus on advanced footwork and entry techniques, and Biu Jee - extreme short-range or long-range techniques, low kicks and sweeps, and emergency techniques.

2. Weapon Forms: The Dragon Pole and Butterfly Swords are the two forms of weapons incorporated in Wing Chun, categorized under advanced training.

3. Wooden Dummy or the Muk Yan Jong Form: A dummy made from several wooden posts represents a human opponent. The contraption is used to perfect angle, position, and footwork.
