Algebra as a Science

Algebra is thought a central arm of mathematics which puts the light on how to deal with all situations involving numbers and variables. Matrix operations, another primary areas of algebra which has a wide applicability when it comes to the real life, includes operations such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing . Other key areas are finding x-intercept of a line and y-intercept of a line - to get the x-intercept of a line, substitute zero for y in the equation and vice versa for finding y-intercept of a line.

Wind Power and DC electricity

DC electricity which can be used to charge batteries which store the electrical energy or can also be fed into a grid interactive inverter for feeding power into the electricity grid. Going green is no longer a fad that gets you labeled a tree hugger. It is something that is a matter of saving the planet and everybody is joining the tree huggers in their efforts. One way to go green is to generate your own electricity using a wind power generator. You’ve probably seen them, they look expensive. They are expensive, but pay for themselves over time with your savings on your power bills. The turbine blades are transformed into an electrical current through a sort of electrical generator. Windmills are obviously a much older means of using wind power, but the concept is exactly the same. Wind energy is ample in locations with large, full ? scale, wind farms. Wind farms usually have huge electrical grids to serve a large population. Sometimes the wind farms are smaller for villages or small, rural areas. Wind energy is renewable, powerful, clean, environmentally sound, and it has the ability to mitigate the greenhouse effect. Then as long as there is wind, the generator will collect the energy from wind and converts it to electricity for your home. Since, we can not control the wind sometimes if wind speed is too low, 7 to 10 mph, the generator will not work however the utility company such as Edison will provide the electricity. I want to briefly explain about some of these advantages and disadvantages that I have learned about in my research. As for benefits of wind power, there are many. The first major one is that wind power is very, very cheap. To build your own windmill, it costs around $200; a small investment to pay for all the savings. The second major advantage is that wind power is not harmful to the environment and in a society that is ‘going green,’ that is very important. As for disadvantages of wind power, there are not many that I have been able to find in my research from myself and others who use windmills for energy.

Cancer Doctors Have Breakthrough Tools in Fight against Mesothelioma, Even if Prognosis Is Still Grim

Oncologists choose what type of treatment to go with for a patient. The options are endless. There are no universal treatment option for mesothelioma cancer victims. Mesotheliomas lack of agreed-upon treatment is due to low a treatment success rate, rareness, a high mortality rate and a small number of studies providing meaningful stats.

Mesothelioma patients have historically had a bleak outlook, but doctors have recently made progress. Traditional treatments for cancer are surgery (removing the tumor and surrounding tissue), radiation (killing the cancerous cells with radiation), and chemotherapy (poisoning the cancerous cells.) Each one of these methods have problems. Mesothelioma patients treated with traditional radiation therapy have not responded well to it. In hopes to lessen damage to healthy tissue, researches are studying ways to aim radiation right at the tumor.

Surgery takes out the mesothelial cancerous tissue around the tumor. This surgery is extensive and it is not clear how much the patient benefits. Most chemotherapy medication that work on other cancers typically do not work on mesothelioma, and different combinations of chemotherapy drugs have been tried without a lot of success. Similar to radiation, focus in research is focusing on treating the physical location of the tumor with emphasis on the pleural cavity.

Many advanced techniques in cancer treatment are tried on mesothelioma patients because of its high fatality rate. These include biologic therapy such as the agent interleukin 2 and anti-angiogenesis drugs such as thalidomide. The new drug pemetrexed (brand name Alimta) has shown good results in extending life with mesotheliomas..

Before acting, oncologists review the stage of mesothelioma, position of the tumor, and age and health status of the patient. Two exotic ways of attacking mesothelioma are gene therapy and photodynamic therapy. Mesothelioma patients sometimes become involved in clinical trials in this area, and see benefits.

Using Algebra

History of Algebra

Recycling Resolutions

Happy New Year!
It’s not too late to make your recycling resolutions.

The holidays are finally over and we can all hopefully begin slowing down and getting our lives back to normal.

If your home is like mine, the holidays left you with a huge mess. Empty boxes and torn wrapping paper litter the floor after the kids excitedly open their gifts. It’s so tempting to gather it all up and through it in the outside garbage bin.
But this is a great opportunity to not only recycle, but to reuse. Almost all of the wrapping paper and boxes can be recycled, so consider keeping your contribution out of the landfill. And for the reuse possibilities…they are practically endless. I’m pretty sure that most of the ribbons I use have been used for several years. And many of the boxes that hold the gifts are great to use for packaging gifts next year. Do you realize that many stores now CHARGE you for a gift box? Sheesh, I’ll save mine for next year, thank you. Not to mention the gift bags. I LOVE getting my gifts in those pretty little bags. Especially since I know I will be using it for someone else’s gift somewhere down the road. Do you know how much those things cost? They are outrageous. No way would I throw them away. They are too valuable.

Now what are we to do with the tree? If you use an artificial tree, it’s a pretty easy decision. You fold it up and store it for next year. Simple. And if you are lucky enough to live in a warm environment and purchased a live tree including the root ball, you can get to work planting it in your yard to enjoy for years to come. But what about cut trees? Most communities offer some sort of Christmas tree recycling. The lucky ones have curbside pickup to recycle their trees. The rest of us need to decide what to do. What convinces me to haul the tree to the recycling facility is a couple of things.
I was willing to haul it home after I purchased it, so I can just as easily take it to be recycled.

Some communities use the old trees to shred and cover pathways and trails through parks. This helps to repair and reduce the damage we create as we enjoy our hikes.

Some communities turn the old trees into mulch and then provide it to the public for free! What a deal. Spring is just right around the corner, by the way.

So that pretty much covers what we can do to reduce our holiday effect on the environment. Now it’s a new year and we can begin thinking about getting a fresh start.
Some resolutions to consider:

- Resolve to begin recycling if you don’t already. You can start small. This site provides a wealth of information about getting your recycling efforts off the ground.

- If you already recycle, step it up a notch. If your curbside recycling service doesn’t accept a particular item (like glass or cardboard), resolve to begin taking that item to the drop off facility in your area.

- Resolve to purchase more products packaged with post consumer recycled materials. The higher the percentage listed on the package, the better.

- Resolve to purchase more items made from recycled materials. Paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, and many other paper products fall into this category.

- Resolve to purchase more items in bulk, thus reducing packaging waste.

- Resolve to create at least one creative craft using something you might otherwise throw away. This is fun, gets your creative juices flowing, can reduce stress, and is a g reat way to spend some quality time with your family.

Plants suggested for Clay soils

We are located in Doylestown Pa. and are surrounded with heavy
clay soils. The soils in our area will not support plants that
can’t tolerate wet feet. Thus our nursery does not offer plants
such as Firs . We do have some spots that will grow firs where
the topsoil is deepest and well drained. Over the years we have
tried to modify soils using compost and drain tiles. Yet long
term nature wins out. The home owner will want to plant species
that are not found naturally in their area so the home owner
will want to modify their soils. On a small scale this is
possible. The use of mounds , the addition of sand, compost and
drain tiles is effective in modifing clay to make growing clay
intolerant plants possible. Usually large amounts of sand and
compost is needed. But be aware that building up the soil in one
area can make more problems in adjacent areas. We also suggest
that if you don’t see a plant growing in your area, only
purchase seedlings or inexpensive container plants to try in
your landscape before spending large amounts of money on large
plants only to find out they are not hardy in your soils.

The following list is suggested plants that do better in clay
soils. Norway maple (Acer platanoides) Silver maple (Acer
saccharinum) European alder (Alnus glutinosa) River birch
(Betula nigra) we have Heritage and Common River birches Honey
locust (Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis) Apple, crabapple

macrocarpa) Willow (Salix) only on large properties, away from
everything especially in septic fields Linden (Tilia) Shrubs

sericea) Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) Burning bush
(Euonymus alatus) Forsythia (Forsythia) Honeysuckle (Lonicera)
Potentilla (Potentilla fruticosa) Willow (Salix) weeping and
corkscrew Elderberry (Sambucus) Lilac (Syringa) French, Korean ,
Common, Micheal Dodge White cedar (Thuja occidentalis) We only
have afew large ones but thousands of seedlings We raise over 10
types ofViburnums on our farms from seedlings to 5′ shrubs. If
you have poor soils due to compacting from construction, try
viburnums. Being rugged and hardy, they perform where other
plants fail.American Cranberry Bush ,Korean Spice,Blackhaw
,ArrowwoodViburnum ,Chicago Luster,Dawn,Summer Snowflake,
Shasta,Erie,Tea,Judd,Korean Spice, Praque,and Siebold.
