Colombian vocalist Shakira has been honoured by the United Countries for her humanitarian efforts of helping underprivileged youngsters across the world. Shakira, thirty three, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, accepted the gong in Geneva, Switzerland on March third as a part of the U.N.’s World Day of Social Justice party. Shakira will release Gypsy music video later this month.
She was feted for setting up her Barefooted Foundation, which provides nourishment and education to over six thousand youngsters. U.N. Labour chief Juan Somavia branded her a “true envoy for youngsters and youngsters, for quality education and social justice”. The ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ vocalist also took the chance to urge others to help. “It’s not so late to keep our guarantee to our youngsters, but we must act now. Together, we will be able to make education and decent work for all a reality,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.
“Working with bankrupted youngsters formed my dream and my dream of social justice : to see a world where each child can live a dignified life with the chance to harvest the advantages of a good education and an opportunity to pursue their dreams,” she said. On receiving the accolade Shakira thanked the UN and dedicated it to all of the kids going through violence and acute misery in the world. The 32-year-old star, who is an affiliate of the ALAS foundation, whose goal is to provide education and medical care to impoverished youngsters in South America, and in addition has worked as a UNICEF Goodwill envoy, claimed : “It’s not so late to keep our guarantee to our youngsters, but we must act now. Together, we will make education and decent work for all a reality.”.
